Field Trip – JP Manning Elementary (10-27-17)

On October 20th, 25 fifth graders from JP Manning Elementary came to Northeastern University for a field trip on engineering. A number of volunteers from Northeastern’s Student Chapter of ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) helped run this field trip. The students learned about the basics of engineering and the engineering design process as Brian presented Intro to Engineering. The students then completed the Reverse Egg Drop challenge where they created devices intended to catch eggs without them cracking.

In the afternoon the students were taught by one of the ASME volunteers about the basics of rocketry and how model Paper Rockets work. The students then developed and designed their own paper rockets that were launched outside and soared into the sky! After the students returned to JP Manning Elementary they submitted reflections on their experiences online, available here for viewing.
