nuSTEM Newsletter 2 (3/27 – 4/3) – Types of Engineering

Welcome to Week 2!
The topic for this week is: the wide world of engineering disciplines.

Click Here for this week’s Newsletter.
In this newsletter you will be introduced to a STEM topic and find a related-activity to work on during the week (please share your results with us!). In addition, we will introduce a Northeastern faculty member working on related research and post some interesting links to related content.

Highlights from Last Week

Resource Highlight

  • TryEngineering.org
TryEngineering informs students, teachers, school counselors and parents about what engineering is and what engineers do. The site contains information and games about the field, provides listings of student programs and opportunities, contains a university finder, and has lesson plans aligned to standards.
  • EngineerGirl
Engineer Girl, designed by the National Academy of Engineering, is a fun and informative site celebrating women in engineering and allows girls to explore what engineers do. It also offers resources to parents, teachers and mentors.

Web Resources for K-12 Students and Parents

In addition to the resource highlight above, which is tied directly to the Newsletter topic, we will also highlight two new web resources each week.

  1. BostonCentral – Virtual Tours:
BostonCentral is a giant collection of upcoming things to do in Boston and beyond, not just limited to STEM. As the pandemic has closed most in-person locations, this website has compiled a collection of virtual activities, such as virtual tours of cool places around the world (including my favorite – the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum). Also includes links live webcams of animals in zoos and sanctuaries around the world. Cute!
  2. Open Culture – K-12 Resources:
Open Culture links to free cultural and educational media on the web, including audio books, eBooks, Movies, Languages, and Online Courses, amongst other things. In addition, the site (linked here) has compiled and organized lists of free K-12 educational resources all over the web.
