nuSTEM Newsletter 6 (4/24 – 5/1) – Electrical/Computer Engineering

Welcome to Week 6!
This week we will be doing a deeper dive into our third engineering disciple: Electrical/Computer Engineering (and Computer Science)!

In this newsletter you will be introduced to a STEM topic and find a related-activity to work on during the week (please share your results with us!), as well as extensions to additional learning or games related to the field. In addition, you will find a Northeastern connection – something Northeastern is doing related to that field.

Highlights from Last Week
This past week, in line with Earth Day, we encouraged newsletter readers think about what they can do to protect planet Earth. At right, some suggestions from one of our younger readers! In addition, we offered an activity for readers to design and try out different materials for water filters. At the same, Loretta Fernandez, a professor in Northeastern’s Civil and Environmental Engineering department has been testing different materials to see their effectiveness as face masks against Coronavirus. Read more about it here!

Resource Highlight

  • Code.org
Code.org has weekly programming challenges to engage students of all abilities (age 6+): tune in with students across the globe to join Code.org’s founder Hadi Partovi, special guests, and Code.org’s best teachers to learn different computer science concepts in a live interactive classroom.
  • Girls Who Code
Girls Who Code (GWC) is a national non-profit working to close the gender gap in technology. The GWC Clubs are free programs for 6-12th grade girls to use computer science to impact their community and join a sisterhood of supportive peers and role models. Northeastern’s branch of GWC meets weekly, although is currently on hold due to the Covid-19 outbreak. When restrictions are lifted – consider getting involved!

Web Resources for K-12 Students and Parents

In addition to the resource highlight above, which is tied directly to the Newsletter topic, we will also highlight two new web resources each week.

  1. TED-ed: Think Like a Coder
Think Like a Coder is a 10-episode series that challenges viewers with programming puzzles as the main characters attempt to save a world that has been plunged into turmoil.
  2. 4 Awesome Discoveries and a Thing You Probably Didn’t Hear About!
In this NSF Video Series, learn about the latest discoveries in science, from astronomy to zoology. Videos are short (2-3 minutes), but there’s 40+ videos! Lots of interesting things to learn about.
