nuSTEM Newsletter 7 (5/1 – 5/8) – Transportation Engineering

Welcome to Week 7!
This week we will be doing a deeper dive into a sub-category of civil engineering: transportation engineering!

In this newsletter you will be introduced to a STEM topic and find a related-activity to work on during the week (please share your results with us!), as well as extensions to additional learning or games related to the field. In addition, you will find a Northeastern connection – something Northeastern is doing related to that field.

Resource Highlight

  • Institute of Transportation Engineers
ITE is the international membership association for transportation professionals. “ITE promotes professional development and career advancement for its members, supports and encourages education, identifies necessary research, develops technical resources including standards and recommended practices, develops public awareness programs, and serves as a conduit for the exchange of professional information.” Northeastern University has it’s own chapter: NUITE.
  • Transportation Books for Kids
What better way for kids to get excited about transportation engineering than to read about transportation books! This (massive) list of children’s stories about transportation can be a helpful resource for parents, teachers, and others searching for a new book.

Web Resources for K-12 Students and Parents

In addition to the resource highlight above, which is tied directly to the Newsletter topic, we will also highlight two new web resources each week.

  1. VolunteerMatch – Virtual Volunteering
VolunteerMatch helps individuals looking to volunteer with events or programs. During the COVID-19 pandemic, VolunteerMatch provides both virtual and on-site volunteer opportunities to aid communities impacted by COVID-19 (Coronavirus). Tons of opportunities, and can sort by location and type.
  2. TeacherTube
TeacherTube is the educational version of YouTube, hosting videos for and by teachers, searchable and sorted by various categories.
