nuSTEM Newsletter 3 (4/3 – 4/10) – Types of Science

Welcome to Week 3!
The topic for this week is: the scientific process and the wide world of science disciplines.

Click Here for this week’s Newsletter.
In this newsletter you will be introduced to a STEM topic and find a related-activity to work on during the week (please share your results with us!). In addition, we will introduce a Northeastern faculty member working on related research and post some interesting links to related content.

Highlights from Last Week
Thanks to all those who participated in last week’s Do Now/Activity! Below you can see some students’ drawings of what they envision an engineer looks like!

Resource Highlight

  • Flinn Science At Home
Flinn Science at Home includes both free video labs with related teacher and student guides, 50 free at home activities that students can use under parental supervision to keep their curiosity piqued, digital learning platforms, and discounted lab kits to order.
  • NIHF Home Learning Resources
National Inventors Hall of Fame (NIHF) has developed an at-home resource center to provide innovative education opportunities, no matter where learning takes place. Web Resources for K-12 Students and Parents

In addition to the resource highlight above, which is tied directly to the Newsletter topic, we will also highlight two new web resources each week.

  1. Exploratorium
The Exploratorium is a museum in San Francisco with a vast online collection of websites, activities, and more. In addition, the Exploratorium has an excellent collection of “Science Snacks”, which are hands-on, teacher-tested activities that use cheap, easily-available materials.
  2. Science with Sophie
“Hosted by science educator, actor, and comedian Sophie Shrand, Science with Sophie is a fast-paced digital series that invites viewers to explore the science all around them. Playing an array of quirky characters, Sophie educates and entertains while showcasing how diverse STEM careers can be.”
