Alumni
Since 1989 we have hosted close to 484 High School students on the Northeastern University campus. Many program alumni continue to maintain contact with program leadership, faculty, staff and with each other. Given our continued challenge as a nation to increase the number of students pursuing STEM majors we would like to share information on some of our alumni and their feedback regarding the importance of having an early research experience. We continue to be grateful to NU faculty, students and staff that have allowed this program to continue for so many years.

How YSP helped influence our Alumni’s educational and professional path:
āI gained experience which gave me the confidence to apply for lab jobs and the drive to pursue more than just a bachelor’s degree. Wendy Smith’s lab was also the main reason I chose to pursue biology in my educational career.ā –Natasha Fedan ā04
āI am currently on the pre-med path and want to go to medical school, but now I want to incorporate research into my practice because I see how important it is. It also influenced me to go to one of the top research universities, Johns Hopkins.ā –Garlyn Colas ā13
āI worked in Dr. Goluch’s chemical engineering lab the summer of Junior year. I hadn’t known what chemical engineering was at the time, but it gave me an introduction to a career I didn’t know existed. I’m currently studying chemical engineering at Northeastern. YSP provided me with my first introduction down the path which I will pursue for my entire career.ā –Matthew Lau ā13

āI enjoyed the experience of working in lab as well as field trips to interesting locations. I also made new friends in the program and had an enriching summer experience that taught me what an education in engineering would be like.ā –Viraj Vora ā05
āOther than the valuable connections with my peers and professors that I worked with, I became very familiar with the lab setting which gave me an advantage when applying for a research assistant position at my undergraduate school. When applying to summer internship programs, I was able to also ask my professor for a letter of recommendation. YSP was where I made my first scientific research poster and was able to present my work at a symposium-like setting. The seminars at lunch time exposed me to different types of research in the science field that I hadn’t considered before.ā –Amberly Diep ā13
