Welcome to Week 8!
This week we will be doing a deeper dive into industrial engineering, which is closely related to mechanical engineering. In fact, at Northeastern University, Industrial Engineering and Mechanical Engineering are one combined department: MIE.
In this newsletter you will be introduced to a STEM topic and find a related-activity to work on during the week (please share your results with us!), as well as extensions to additional learning or games related to the field. In addition, you will find a Northeastern connection – something Northeastern is doing related to that field.
- IISE – Institute of Industrial & Systems Engineers
IISE is the international membership association for industrial engineers. IISE provides opportunities for careers and professional development, provides opportunities for and encourages volunteering, develops technical standards and recommended practices, and provides a platform to exchange professional information (such as at conferences). Northeastern University has it’s own chapter: NU IISE.
- Engineering Toolbox
Engineering Toolbox is, unsurprisingly, a toolbox for engineers. Primarily meant for engineers already in the field, but also useful for students studying engineering, this website provides an incredible variety of different tools, such as unit converters, 2D and 3D drawing software, and material properties databases, as well as much, much more.
Web Resources for K-12 Students and Parents
In addition to the resource highlight above, which is tied directly to the Newsletter topic, we will also highlight two new web resources each week.
- Rainstorm – Virtual Event for High School Students
Due to the coronavirus, most Splash (including Northeastern’s own NEPTUN) were not able to run this semester. Because of this, the SPLASH parent organization is bringing you Rainstorm! Rainstorm is a virtual, two-day educational program where high school students can take live classes taught by college students over video conferencing. These classes are not just like your high school classes: think short, interactive, and unique classes. (Yoga! Cooking demos! Rocket Science!) Rainstorm will run May 30th + 31st (Sa/Su) from 12pm-5pm EST. Registration is open now, and will be through May 13. Registration is on a lottery system, so sign up soon!
- Science Mom
Happy Mother’s Day (this Sunday)! As such, we’d like to highlight a website made by a mom – a Science Mom (Jenny Ballif). She has created this website, which has a variety of science activities for kids of all ages. There is a video series (over 100 videos), printables, a weekly science-activity, and more. Check it out!
