Field Trip – Columbus Elementary School (3-17-17)

On March 17th, 74 fifth graders from Columbus Elementary School came to Northeastern University for a field trip on pollution. The students did the Who Polluted and Water Filters activity. They were taught about the sources and effects of pollution by Volunteer Colin. The students then designed and constructed their own water filters that were then tested with “polluted water” samples.

In the afternoon the students then did the Oil Spill activity. Students simulated the effects of oil spills on a body of water. Students then learned about the different sources of oil spills and different methods of cleaning up these spills. The students then experimented with the different techniques to determine which performed best in their simulation.
