Dearborn STEM – STEM Field Trip (02.25.2021)

Today was the third field trip of National Engineer’s Week!

We typically only run field trips (especially virtual ones) for upper elementary and middle school students, but today we had 9th and 10th graders from the Dearborn STEM Academy. The theme of today’s field trip was “Engineering in College.”

First, attending students had a STEM/College 101 panel with Northeastern students from a variety of engineering majors: thank you to our panel members Nathalie, Tyree, Kayla, Madisyn, and Chris, and our panel moderator Salima.

A few examples of the questions asked were:

  • How/why did you choose your major?
  • Why did you pick Northeastern University?
  • Are college classes hard?
  • What’s your favorite/least favorite thing about college?

All these questions and more were answered by all our panelists, which come from a variety of different backgrounds and provided different perspectives about what students can expect from college.

After the Q/A, professor Jen Love joined us and shared a presentation about her journey: she started by telling us about her experiences beginning at her undergraduate experiences to her current position here at NU as a professor in the first-year engineering program.
